SAU Identity
University seal
At the center of the University’s seal is the cross of Christ, the 2,000-year symbol of Christianity. It forms the centerpiece of the shield of faith. In the upper left quadrant is the lamp of learning, a timeless symbol of our quest for knowledge. From its spout emerges an eternal flame consisting of three parts. The three-fold flame symbolizes the Trinity—God the father, God the son, God the spirit—as our guiding light in our pursuit of truth and it reminds us that all truth is God's truth. In the upper right quadrant is an open book symbolizing both our commitment to learning and our belief that the Bible is the foundation for all wisdom and knowledge.
Across the mid-section of the seal is a ribbon holding three Latin words: Fides, Vivens, and Discens. The choice of these three words is of central importance to our Spring Arbor University Concept. Their presentation in Latin reminds us that the church started the first universities 800 years ago for the distinct purpose of integrating a liberal arts curriculum within the broader scope of our Christian faith.
Fides is the Latin word for faith. Here, we remember that Jesus Christ is the foundation for all we do and that He shapes our total perspective for life. Vivens is the Latin word for living and means not only biological existence, but all that comprises our life: our thoughts, activities, hopes, dreams, and contributions. Here, we remember our call to be critical participants in the world. Discens is the Latin word for holistic learning. It has the same connotation as one who becomes a disciple or apprentice and it reminds us of our lifelong commitment to learning and the liberal arts.
On the rim of the seal appears our name, the date of our founding and two oak leaves. The name maintains our 135-year identity both as a program of learning and a geographical place. The oak leaves remind us of our ivy-cutting ceremony at graduation and the majestic tree that sits in the center of campus. It also symbolizes the strength and stability of our educational foundation.

School song
"Our School"
By Coral Demaray (words) and Minnie Blowers (music)
"Michigan boasts of forests and lakes; Her beauties our hearts entwine; But there is a spot will ne’er be forgot, far dearer than lake or pine.
Chorus: Then speed the glad song with and the chorus prolong, ‘till the echoes reach heaven above; her banner unfurled shall bless the whole world, Spring Arbor, the school we love.
Long may her colors float on the breeze, her banner of blue and gold! The one is the hue of loyalty true, in the other her glories behold!
From north and south they come to her call: her fame is spread far and wide; from east and from west the join in the quest of knowledge that will abide.
Tho’ we may wander far from her hills, still memories will linger near, of days full of joy, without an alloy, and friends we have loved while here.
Hail, Alma Mater! We cherish thy name: may many more years be thine, to shed forth thy light, with rays clear and bright; fulfilling thy mission divine."
