Annual poetry reading set for Nov. 17
Nov. 13, 2009
Students, staff and alumni poets of Spring Arbor University will come together on Tuesday, Nov. 17, to share their work at a poetry reading. The poetry reading will be held at the Prop Shop at 8:00 p.m. Admission is free.
Annually organized by assistant professor of English, Brent Cline, this year, poets will include alumna Jennifer Leigh-Rork Thompson, student Michael Strubler, library director, Roy Meador and Cline.
Attendants can expect to hear several different styles of poetry, including poems-in-progress, surreal poems, and poems inspired by the Beat generation.
“Most people have never even been to a poetry reading and don’t know what to expect,” says Cline. “It’s more informal and celebratory than people know.”
“The history of poetry tells us that poetry is a public art,” says Cline. “I think we have several good writers on campus, but there are only a few public outlets for them to share their work.” Cline also cites SAU’s literary journal, The Oak Tree Review, as another creative writing outlet. He believes the journal and the poetry reading are staples of one another.
