Department of Sociology, Global Studies, and Criminal Justice
The majors offered through the Department of Sociology, Global Studies and Criminal Justice at Spring Arbor University provide students with an understanding of social order, social conflict and social change. Significant social issues are confronted by integrating sociological principles and theories with Christian faith. Students majoring in sociology will develop skills in social analysis and intervention that are applicable to families and small groups as well as complex organizations and communities.
As the chair of the Department of Sociology, Global Studies and Criminal Justice at Spring Arbor University, let me welcome you to our departmental website. The Department of Sociology, Global Studies and Criminal Justice at Spring Arbor University offers three separate majors: sociology, global studies, and criminal justice. While we have three different majors with different emphases, we have one vision: social analysis for social change toward social justice. Because our vision is rooted in the Spring Arbor University Concept we are committed to serious study of the liberal arts. In our department, that means training students who are capable of doing quality research, thoughtful analysis and critical thinking.
We are also committed to Jesus Christ as our perspective for learning. Our passion for social justice comes from our understanding of the Biblical concepts of shalom and the Kingdom of God. We feel called to do what God requires . . . . “Do justice, love tenderly, and walk humbly with your God” (Micah 6:8).
We are also committed to critical participation in the contemporary world. All of our faculty in the sociology department have spent significant time in other parts of the world. Graduates of the Department of Sociology, Global Studies and Criminal Justice have worked as community organizers, pastors, teachers, administrators, law enforcement officers, and in social services. In their diverse roles, they have acted as change agents around the globe.
Finally, we are a community of learners. We each have a different perspective, but we are united in our pursuit of understanding and our commitment to faithfully follow where God leads. I invite you to consider becoming an important part of our community.
