President Emeritus Dr. Charles Webb at Spring Arbor University

Spring Arbor University (SAU) alumnus and President Emeritus Dr. Charles H. Webb, Ph.D. is a recipient of the 2019 Michigan State University (MSU) Alumni Service Award. This award is presented to MSU alumni who have demonstrated service to the university and/or meritorious public service on a local, state, national or international level.

Webb led a distinguished, 32-year career at MSU, serving for 12 years as Executive Director of the Alumni Association, 10 years as president of the MSU Foundation and 12 years as Vice President for University Development. Under his leadership, The Campaign for Michigan State University committed $1.439 billion, surpassing its $1.2 billion goal 15 months ahead of schedule.

Following his tenure at MSU, Webb served as president of SAU for five years until his retirement in 2013.

“I was thrilled to find out Chuck Webb was the recipient of this well-deserved award from MSU,” exclaims current SAU President, Dr. Brent Ellis. “Spring Arbor University has been impacted in so many ways through his servant’s heart. Dr. Webb was committed to producing critical thinkers who would serve all of humanity with humility. His generosity and service inspires others to give back to their communities and to the world.”

Webb has been involved in several philanthropic endeavors at MSU. Along with his wife of 50 years, Webb established the Chuck and Philippa Webb Endowment to support disabled students pursuing education degrees at MSU. Additionally, Webb has chaired fundraising initiatives for the MSU Retirees Association.

Webb shows his MSU spirit by connecting students in the university’s College of Music with performance opportunities in his home city of Grand Rapids. He’s also a charter member of the West Michigan Senior Alumni Club.

“Michigan State University is nurturing others through education, providing students the necessary set of tools and then propelling them to do great things. The hallmark of any great university is the accomplishments of its alumni. I’m proud to be one of them,” says Webb.

Webb holds a B.A. in Social Science and a Philosophy-Religion Teaching Certification from SAU, a M.A. in Counseling and Student Personnel from Western Michigan University and a Ph.D. in Administration in Higher Education from MSU’s College of Education.
