About the Visual Communication Program
Visual communication has more to do with the ways images can be used than how to make them. The visual communication major is about putting images together in a way that will effectively communicate or sell, providing basic foundations for leadership roles in advertising and marketing.
Our mission in the Department of Communication and Media is to prepare credible, creative Christian professionals for a world where the mastery of communication skills and technologies is essential. We accomplish our mission by helping students produce, publish and perform original work that is both ethical and effective.

The video and film major is offered by the Department of Communication and Media. Other majors and minors within the department include advertising and public relations, broadcasting, communication studies, cross cultural communication, drama, professional writing, speech and video and film.

The study of communication at Spring Arbor University is a hands-on experience, with a foundation in classical and Christian perspectives. All students complete a core sequence that promotes a thoughtful and ethical understanding of communication principles and best practices.
We offer extracurricular opportunities in writing, acting, broadcasting, filmmaking, designing, producing and researching in addition to practical hands-on experiences in the classroom. Our students with awards in state and national competitions and engage in meaningful internships.

The courses for the 67-hour visual communication major include such subject areas as rhetoric, writing for the media, photography, graphic design, advanced advertising, corporate communication, consumer behavior, marketing principles, persuasive speaking, and intercultural communication.

Within the Department of Communication and Media and throughout campus, there are a wide range of opportunities for students to get involved, apply what they’re learning in the classroom in a practical way, and meet students who have similar passions. Here is a list of just some of the opportunities available that might interest broadcasting students:
- “Will-Shoot-for-Credit” Short Films Screening (event) – The best short films and videos of each semester are shown to an excited campus audience. Video/Film students get to see their hard work pay off, and the community has a night of original entertainment, fresh popcorn, and familiar faces on the big screen.
- Almost Chapel — A weekly intro show that airs before SAU Chapel, chock full of news, announcements and shenanigans.
- FM radio stations– Spring Arbor University serves as home to two FM radio stations: Home.fm and The Tune.
- Musicals and plays – From dazzling musicals, to cutting-edge black-box theater performances, to award-winning plays, the Spring Arbor theater program offers a wide range of theatrical outlets enough to sate the appetite of the most enthusiastic theater guru.
