Spring Arbor University

CORE / Community of Learners (COL)

Core groups are a crucial part of how Spring Arbor University will prepare you for a life of wisdom. Through experiences outside the classroom, Community of Learners (COL) courses will encourage you to unify your passions and knowledge and prepare you to critically participate in the contemporary world.

Freshman Core Experience

Build relationships

In Community of Learners (COL) 100, you’ll meet your core group — 15 new friends, 1 peer advisor and 1 faculty advisor who will all serve as your family while you navigate your first semester. Go off-grid and bond with each other during a weekend trip to Cedar Bend — an 1800’s farm in northern Michigan. Throughout the year, your core group will support and challenge you to critically assess who you want to be. Discover what you stand for, learn to put others first and begin a lifelong pursuit of wisdom.

CORE 200 Chicago trip

Sophomore Core Experience

Explore the issues facing our world

In Community of Learners (COL) 200, instead of merely talking about poverty, you’ll start to encounter its realities up-close. Central to the COL 200 experience, a trip to inner-city Chicago or Detroit will expose you to neighborhoods in need of hope as much as food and funding. Meet with community leaders who embrace the people most of society ignores. COL 200 will stretch your religious, political and socioeconomic views and draw you out of your comfort zone.

Junior Core Experience

Travel to another country

Don’t just study the world — experience it! Community of Learners (COL) 275 will commit you to a three-week adventure that will take you across the globe to see firsthand how another culture worships, learns, plays and lives. Visit monuments and taste local delicacies, but, more significantly, meet the people, understand their struggles and share in their joys.

Study spiritual formation

In Community of Learners (COL) 300, you’ll analyze what you believe and why you believe it. Themes from the biblical narrative will go under the microscope as you discover the depth of a spirituality rooted in scripture and witness to history.

Senior Core Experience

Wisdom applied

In Community of Learners (COL) 400, you’ll learn how to apply the experiences and knowledge you’ve gained at SAU appropriately. COL 400 will challenge you to consider your worldview, motivations and capacity to impact God’s kingdom. Participate in discussions on how to lead within your church, community and profession. Go beyond the textbook, and engage with your true self.
“COL 400 challenges you to ask the hard questions of how you view the world. There is an old saying that says if you stand for nothing, you fall for everything. COL 400 helps you discover just what you stand for.” – Lisa Byers
