Commencement Information

Commencement Ceremonies 

Spring Arbor University is excited to host Commencement Ceremonies for graduates on two Saturdays: May 15 and May 22. The events have been modified for COVID-19 protocol compliance to ensure that all participants can celebrate SAU’s graduates safely. In lieu of traditional indoor ceremonies, the university will hold five ceremonies outside on the Campus Plaza. 

Each ceremony will address a specific group of graduates, outlined as follows.

May 15 at 10 a.m. – Traditional undergraduate campus students with majors in the Schools of Communication, Media, and Fine Arts; Education; Engineering; Humanities; and Natural Sciences (fall 2020 and spring 2021 conferrals)

May 15 at 1 p.m. – Traditional undergraduate campus students with majors in the Schools of Business; Social Sciences; and Nursing and Health Sciences (fall 2020 and spring 2021 conferrals)

May 22 at 10 a.m. – Undergraduate students enrolled in programs online, via Zoom, or at SAU’s sites around Michigan and Ohio (spring 2020, fall 2020 and spring 2021 conferrals), as well as traditional undergraduate campus students who completed degrees in spring 2020

May 22 at 1 p.m. – Graduate students who completed master’s degrees in the following disciplines: Education (all areas); Business Administration, Management and Organizational Leadership; Social Work; and Strategic Communications and Leadership (all 2020 and spring 2021 conferrals)

May 22 at 4 p.m. – Graduate students who completed master’s degrees in Nursing and Counseling (all 2020 and Spring 2021 conferrals)

Diplomas 

Each graduate’s diploma will be mailed to the address listed on his or her graduation application. Diplomas will be mailed on the first of the month following the submission of graduates’ graduation applications and the clearance of their academic records and financial accounts.

All graduates must be cleared for participation in commencement through the Office of Registration and Records. If you have any questions regarding your standing, please contact one of the following members of staff.

Academic Honors 

Graduation honors are awarded to bachelor’s degree candidates for three levels of performance: Summa Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude and Cum Laude.

Caps & Gowns

Complete your cap and gown order online by April 1. Please make sure to ship your order directly to your place of residence, as campus pick-up will not be available. If you have any questions regarding caps and gowns, email Jaime Devine at Jaime.Devine@arbor.edu.   

Name Pronunciation 

We want to ensure that your graduation experience is the best it can be. Please call 517.750.6446 and leave a message with the correct pronunciation of your name. Messages will be collected until April 26.  

Parking 

All parking lots on campus will be open to commencement participants and guests. Permits will not be required. Parking attendants will direct traffic. Please do not park on the street. Additional parking is available at The Arbor Church. Drop-off locations will be on College Street and the Main Entrance.

Accessible Parking & Seating 

Accessible parking will be available in the parking lot nearest University Plaza, on College Street. Parking attendants will direct traffic and can assist with your parking needs.

Accommodations 

There are many dining and lodging options in Jackson, Michigan, which is eight miles away from campus. 

Seating (RSVP Required) 

Each graduate may bring up to four guests to the celebration. Seating will be socially distanced and set up in groups of four. Guests are asked not to arrive more than 45 minutes before the designated ceremony begins.

Those unable to attend may view the commencement ceremonies live online.

Graduate Photographs 

A professional photographer will take two pictures of each graduate, one of the graduate receiving his or her diploma cover and another of the graduate posed with his or her diploma cover. Two small proofs will be mailed to each graduate. 

Campus Store Hours

The SAU Campus Store will be open both Saturdays of commencement (May 15 and May 22) from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The campus store is located on the upper level of the Student Life Center.
