Commencement Information

Processional & Ceremony

Graduates will line up in the Dunckel Gymnasium, located on the right side of the McDonald Athletic Center (MAC) lobby. Graduates will be organized by program. Please note there is no secure place to leave personal items such as purses.

Diplomas

As graduates cross the platform during the graduation ceremony, they will only receive diploma covers. Each graduate’s diploma will be mailed to the address listed on his or her graduation application. Diplomas will be mailed the first of the month following the clearance of graduates’ academic records and financial account and the submission of his or her graduation application.

All students must be cleared for participation in commencement through the Office of Registration and Records. If you have any questions regarding your standing, contact one of the following members of staff:

Academic Honors

Graduation honors are awarded to bachelor’s degree candidates for three levels of performance: Summa Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude and Cum Laude.

Caps & Gowns

Complete your cap & gown order online by Sept. 23 to avoid a late fee. If you have any questions regarding caps and gowns, call Elaina Evans at 517.750.6518. Caps and gowns need not be returned — they are yours to keep. No online orders will be accepted after Oct. 25.

Cap & Gown Pick-up

Global Sites: You may pick up your cap & gown at your learning site during normal business hours between Monday, Nov. 4 and Thursday, Nov. 14. Contact your site directly if you are unable to visit during business hours.

Spring Arbor Campus: You may pick up caps and gowns in the Office of Registration & Records during normal business hours between Monday, Nov. 4 and Thursday, Nov. 14.

Online: You may have your cap and gown sent directly to your home or pick it up the day of graduation in the Dunckel Gymnasium before the lineup begins.

Name Pronunciation

We want to ensure that our students’ graduation experience is the best it can be. Please call 517.750.6348 or stop by the Academic Affairs Office (across from the President’s Office in the Student Life Center) to provide the proper pronunciation of your name. Without your verification, we cannot ensure the correct pronunciation of your name on graduation day.

Parking

All parking lots on campus will be open to commencement participants and guests. Permits will not be required. Parking attendants will direct traffic. Limited shuttle service will be available.

Nursery

Child care will be available for children aged one to four. Children can be dropped off and picked up in Room 216 on the second floor of the MAC. Parents are asked to provide an accessible cell phone number.

Wheelchair Accessible Parking & Seating

Wheelchair accessible parking will be available in the parking lot nearest the MAC. Parking attendants will be directing traffic and will assist you with your parking needs.

Most commencement seating is on the ground floor. If wheelchair access is needed, please see an usher for assistance.

Accommodations

There are many dining and lodging options in Jackson, Michigan, which is eight miles away from campus.

Tickets & Seating

There is no reserved seating at commencement. Tickets are not required for any commencement activities.

Live Stream

Those unable to attend may view the commencement ceremonies live online.

  • Go to www.arbor.edu/livestream.
  • Click the box on the right with the red banner that says “Click to watch now LIVE.”
  • Click the box labeled “Commencement.”

Graduate Photographs

A professional photographer will take two pictures of each graduate, one of the graduate receiving his or her diploma cover and another of the graduate posed with his or her diploma cover. Two small proofs will be mailed to each graduate.

Bookstore Hours

The campus bookstore will be open the Friday before commencement from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and the Saturday of commencement from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The bookstore is located on the upper level of the Student Life Center on College Street.

Commencement Flowers

Enactus will sell roses at commencement as a fundraiser. Sales will begin when doors open for commencement. Available in red, yellow, pink, and white, the flowers will be wrapped while you wait. Look for the flower table near the arena entrance.
